This bookmark was tatted from quick notes that I made about a photograph that appeared on the old eTatters site. The original was tatted in size 80 thread (variegated pink and soft green). The shape of this bookmark has always appealed to me immensely. It seemed a good project for Yarnplayer’s
Luna and Purple in size 40.
If you recognize this as your pattern (with different stitch counts because I was winging it), please leave me a message in the comments, so I can give you proper credit and, if there is interest and it is not a violation of copyright, make the pattern available.
It was one of those projects that just came together: no muss, no fuss, no do-overs. (How often does that happen?) A slight ruffling in the outer chains went away with a light pressing and one Aero bobbin of Luna in shuttle one was the exact amount of thread needed (8″ left after sewing in ends). The size and placement of the outer chain picots do not please me (too few, too small), but were in keeping with the original photo. Something I would tweak in a subsequent version.

Ooooh, love the bookmark and the colours – well, WOW. It looks sort of familiar but I’m not sure really.
SO pretty.

This is a great design, largely because of the way you used color. I don’t think a one-color bookmark would look quite as nice but I think I’d still like it. A lot. 🙂

Pleased to see you back as you always have interresting, thoughtful things to say. One thing is because of your conversation with Krystle I now make an extra half ds and post and that improved my tatting.
How did I miss this bookmark back in March! So very stunning. May you have a blessed Easter. Karen in OR
PS if you’re sharing the pattern I’d like to know.

Hi Karen,
Thanks for the welcome back. Actually, in a final update on the matter of extra half stitches and dropping the shuttle through the ring, this is the methodology that I now employ: frontside – add extra second half ds and close (without dropping the shuttle through the ring); backside – no extra half ds and drop the shuttle through the ring to the front, and close. If extra roundness is desired, I drop the shuttle through the ring on the frontside.
Rings are harder to reopen if the shuttle is not dropped through from the frontside. Otherwise, the extra half ds does cure the rolling tendency. Doesn’t seem to be necessary on the backside. Have yet to puzzle out why.
Still haven’t heard from the original poster of the photo of this bookmark that I worked from. When, and if, I make another one, I’ll write up a pattern.
Lovely to hear from you!

Karen I just found your site I would love to have this pattern if r still offering it. But can it be done with needle tatting?

Suzanne
Hi Mary,
Not my pattern. I just tatted the bookmark from a photograph. Yes, it should be doable in needle tatting because it is a very simple tat.

Hi, Karen,
This is not my pattern. I tatted it from a photograph; and I never made another one, so I didn’t write it up. It is very straightforward tat, if I remember correctly (it has been several years).

Hi, Rebecca,
This is not my pattern, and I have not written it up – I just tatted it from a photograph. I think that this photo is clear enough for you to do the same. It is a very simple tat.

Since you are new to tatting, Rebecca, I can probably give you a hand figuring it out. Fortunately, I do have the bookmark at hand, so can work out where I started, etc. It is just rings and chains. Are you more comfortable with a diagram or written instructions?
